Day 72: Holi- The Festival of Colours

We are lucky, lucky people. Lucky because we happened to be in India at the right time to experience Holi-- the festival of colours.

Holi is becoming quite a thing back West. I know most of my friends in Provo have gone to the celebration down in Spanish Fork to throw colours at each other and to breathe in a lot of cornstarch. And in the last few years people have started running 5k's while simultaneously having colours thrown at them. Some might say its overrated. And to them I say... haha, okay. Be that way if you want.
I can promise you that Holi is all its cracked up to be. If you enjoyed water fights as a child then there is no reason why you still shouldn't feel the sheer childish delight of covering someone's face in bright purple powder (that probably won't wash out for a few days) or in dumping a huge bucket of green water on the neighbourhood boys as they taunt you with their toy watercolour guns.

It's just one of those beautiful things that makes life go round and round, with children counting down the days and parents secretly stocking up on colour (because they love that for a day they can be as childish as they want to be). Don't you just love those subtle things that humans make up as excuses to let loose and to break the monotony of day to day life for just a moment??

Our Telugu teacher told us that Holi is to celebrate all the colours of life-- to remind us of the beauty and vibrancy around us. He said, "Today, the people will be happy!" How simple! Today the colour and the laughter and the playfulness made us happy.

Some days happiness is finding a way to let go!

Love,

Stéf
