Day 44: Bridegrooms and Peter Pan

This morning we got up bright and early to go to a wedding celebration. We went to this lovely apartment complex with our Telugu teacher Lakshmi. She introduced us around and we watched some of the rituals (they make offerings to the Gods and sprinkle rice on the parents and groom's heads as a blessing). Today was just to celebrate the bridegroom and his family. We didn't see the bride-- she was at her own home doing the same thing with her family members and friends. The bridegroom was lathered with this yellow paste (tumeric maybe?) and a million pictures were taken.
We were fed some food (idli) and given presents (cloth for a saree top and a cosmetic bag!). Everyone was so nice! Its so nice how weddings here are an opportunity for people to come home, to see their friends and to spend a few days talking and celebrating. I guess it is the same back home! But from talking to one of the ladies I found out that at least 6 families there this morning where living abroad or had children living abroad! How many people back home can say that? Indian people are typically very used to staying around their family. But modernization in the last few generation has separated a lot of families. Children go where they have to go to make money. And more and more frequently that means that they have to go abroad! America, Canada, Australia, Dabai, Saudi... people here have family everywhere!

Tonight we are all relaxing and enjoying our Sunday. Bekah and I are watching Peter Pan :) I get along really well with Bekah. She likes to read so we talk about books and she loves Finding Neverland and Hook so obviously this was the right movie choice for us. We are just realizing how strange some things in this movie are. For example Hook is a CRYBABY. Peter Pan has a lot of ladies. The crocodile is the funniest thing ever. I feel like as a child I must have been laughing my head off whenever him and Hook were fighting. Oh and the whole 'Indians' thing is really racist. This movie is ancient!! 1953.

We were going to watch Jodha Akbar (one of the Hindi movies I recommended) but the subtitles were horrible. We were laughing so hard! It absolutely did not make sense. We've both seen it before so we were fine with skipping out on it.
Here we are looking comf in our Western clothes haha

A few days ago Bekah has some Henna so we all practiced making designs on ourselves. It is HARD. I couldn't make straight lines. haha But I love how it looks when it gets dark brown (because at first it is bright orange).

Enjoy the last little bit of your weekend!
This next week we have 3 days to work (I have a few interviews already planned) and then on Thursday we leave for Delhi and for our trip in Northern India. I can't believe how fast time has gone.
