Day 9: Church and Children

Church in India is very interesting! The sabbath comes around and we get dressed in our usual salwar kameez or saris (since people here are always dressed up in some way). Then we take a rickshaw downtown where we go to church in one of the big buildings. I guess the church rents at least three floors of that building because they have a lot of space. There are three branches that meet there-- one meets at 9am, another at 11am and another at 2pm. This week we went for the 11pm session because Sarah's parents know the branch president. Its a funny story! They actually met him in the Hong Kong temple a few months ago and found out he would be in the same area that we are staying. It's really a small world!!

We loved church today! But the funniest part was when they asked us to sing a musical number for them... the pianist came up to us and gave us the hymn "Let us oft speak kind words to each other" and asked us to come up and sing for all of them... The rest of the girls and I were kind of shocked... but what could we say? So up we went and we sang it as best as we could. Its definitely not a hymn we know well enough to spontaneously perform. After that I'm thinking they might not ask to do it again. But my professor said its most likely it will happen every week. Woohoo. Next time I'm going to tell the pianist that we get to choose the song! :P

Now to finish off this post here is the picture of one the little boys we live with. His name is Siddartha (but we all call him Siddu). He is full of energy. He loves to play with our things and play games with us. He's definitely a handful but we all love him anyways because we don't need to know Telugu to be around him. And kids are just so comforting!
Here's Siddu.. taking possession of my bed. He looks mischievous huh?
